Christmas is a joyous time of the year: a time when families come together, businesses boom and, for a short moment, all the troubles of the world seem to disappear. However, poor planning can make Christmas a trouble of its own. Take heed of this simple tips to ensure smooth sailing this holiday season.
Do shop online. For the frugal buyer, amazon.com is a great place to start, otherwise take the fight straight to your favorite store’s website.
Don’t buy electronics before Dec. 25. As un-festive as it may seem, TVs, computers and music players are ridiculously marked up for holiday buyers, and, while malls are a zoo right after Christmas, prices are shaved immensely: http://www.microcenter.com/
Do consider tickets to a number of upcoming 2012 concerts as a present. A printable and very cool gift: http://www.ticketmaster.com/
Don’t skimp on a tree. That Fraser Fir makes my living room smell like sweet pine sap. What does yours smell like? Disappointment?
Do have a “Jewish Christmas.” Chinese food is very satisfying on Dec. 24.
Don’t bother watching Nickelodeon or various equivalents for Christmas specials. Their new shows are trash, and the old ones are probably not as good as you remember. Get some movies instead. I’m thinking Edward Scissorhands this year…
Do boil Cherry Coke for its aroma. I’m not joking, it smells sweet and cinnamon-y, and, well, like Christmas.
Don’t read Philip Resnick’s Christmas editorial in the most recent issue of The Pitch, it was very obnoxious.
Do remember that food is a good present, especially if you’ve made it from scratch.
Don’t give money as a gift. It’s impersonal and depressingly unimaginative.
Do remember that books exist. Your parents read them. Buy one.
Don’t be a Scrooge. Christmas only happens once a year!
