You Wanna Listen to Some REAL Music?

Changing attitudes in music.

I scroll through the comments section of a YouTube video fron Monstercat, an EDM (Electronic Dance Music) channel, perusing a massive argument over whether the song playing in the background is dubstep or drumstep. “It has wubbing in it!” says one commenter. “It can’t be dubstep! It’s good!” states another. The comment chain is almost 40 comments long and while I’m actually slightly amused by the conversation on my screen, I mostly feel disappointment.

It strikes me as odd how people get so angry about music choice that they insult people to the point of borderline assualt and yet consider themselves better than those they are insulting. People aren’t afraid to let people know how they feel about music.  Who hasn’t seen the guy who listens only to The Beatles, and thinks every other band is absolute garbage. Who hasn’t been exposed to some guy ranting about how much he knows about music, and how everyone else is an uncultured barbarian? Who hasn’t borne witness to the guy who sings dubstep? We’ve turned music from something we enjoy, to something we religiously defend.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-music (who is?), I’m just annoyed  by these pretentious shmucks who consider themselves experts, or those people who only listent to one genre, artist or song. It just seems like those who only listen to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones or The Who are stuck in the past, keeping their minds closed to the good music of this generation. Now granted, I don’t love all the music of this generation, but that doesn’t mean I  immediately insult everyone who doesn’t agree with me. Would you do the same if someone didn’t agree with you on religion? Or about politics? Most people would say no. So why, oh why, are we getting worked up over something as trivial as music? Why is it that people feel need to tell everyone that The Beatles are better than a EDM artist like Tristam?  The sixties also had bad music, we just don’t remember it. And in a few years we will have forgotten about that one song Tristam made, and the argument in the comments of that music video. So everyone, just relax,  listen to your favorite artist, and please, please don’t judge me for liking both rock music and drum and bass.
