Greek and Latin Club Profile

Greek and Latin Club Profile

There have been many new clubs created in the past year at WJ: Sailing Club, the Rubik’s Cube Club, the Young Democrats and Republicans,  the Random Acts of Kindness Club, among many others. Not all of these clubs will continue to exist in several years when the founding members have graduated. However, WJ’s Greek and Latin Club has withstood the tests of time, remaining in existence since before sponsor Karen Generose came to WJ in 2003. However, at that time, the clubs were separate.

“When I started teaching here at WJ in the fall of 2003, the school already had a Latin Club and a Greek Club.” Generose said. “I kept the two clubs separate for a few years, but then I decided to merge them into one, after I consulted with the students who were members.”

The combination of the two clubs has proved successful, with the planning of fun activities throughout the school year. Members learn the Greek alphabet, go on field trips to Greek restaurants, visit museums and host movie nights, among a plethora of other ventures. Last year, they even reenacted the Trojan War. Club president Pam Fucello said that the biggest activity during the school year is the sweatshirt fundraiser.

“The members design a Latin-themed sweatshirt for the club on CustomInk, and we sell to anyone that wants one.” said Fucello.

But while its name implies that the ten club members are of Greek or Latin descent or take Latin as a class, Fucello said that is not the case.

“The club isn’t just made up of Greeks and people who take Latin,” said Fucello.Anyone who is interested in ancient culture can join. It’s a really fun way explore ancient Greek and Roman history.”
