What are some of your interests outside of school?
KD: Family, mostly. I got two little, free-range organic children and they take [up] a lot of time. [I have] a six year-old boy and an eight year-old daughter, about to turn nine. They go to a private school, and I’m busy with helping their school do stuff. [I’m also] busy with my church, I do stuff with them. And we like [to take] vacations, taking trips [and going to] places. Rock-climbing and camping and things.
What are some of the places you have visited?
KD: Last summer we drove cross-country, camped for three-and-a-half weeks. [We went] rock-climbing in Rock State Park in Idaho, went to the Tetons and [went] camping and rock-climbing there, went to Yellowstone [National Park] and visited friends along the way.
What are some of your interesting or unique hobbies?
KD:Rock-climbing is probably [my] most unique hobby, and I’ve been doing that for 26 years. That and I like doing fine woodwork. Nice things, toys for my kids, or for my wife.
How did you get into rock-climbing?
KD: In high school, a friend of mine did it and he took me out. Back then nobody was doing it, it wasn’t popular. For basically $140 you have enough stuff to climb outdoors, and for the first five years I climbed barefoot because I couldn’t afford shoes, special rock-climbing shoes. It was just fun, it was different, it was exciting, it was interesting. [It was] better than just hanging out at the mall, doing whatever with your friends. And then you [get to] travel to cool places and camping is always fun.
What are some things you would like to accomplish in your lifetime?
KD: I taught in the Peace Corps when I lived in Africa for two years, and I’d like to go back to my village if I could and I’d like to take my family. We’d like to travel to Africa and see what there is to see, I think we’re planning to go, not this summer, but next summer we’re starting to plan a trip to actually go do that.
