Up and Coming club: Becca’s closet Club

Up and Coming club: Becca’s closet Club

Every year, Walter Johnson High school adds more clubs to the community with different focuses. A growing club, that has started to gain popularity is Becca’s closet Club.

This club came about when a girl in Southern Florida named Rebecca Kirtman wanted to help all girls be able to attend their school Prom, and provide some girls who are less fortunate with dresses. Her first year collecting was 2003, she collected and distributed over 250 prom dresses to needy girls. Unfortunately in August of 2003, she was killed in an automobile accident, and friends of Rebecca made the club to honor her and to continue to provide prom dresses to allow girls to attend prom no matter their financial status.

This club was then adapted to Walter Johnson by senior Brynn Blizzard during the fall of her freshman year in 2013. Secretary of the club, senior Edom Leul has been an active member of the club since the club started her freshman year in 2013.

I decided to be a member because I wanted to be involved in a club that would make a difference in someone’s life.” Leul said.

Every club has a teacher or staff member as a sponsor of the club. Ms.Lorraine Goldstein is this club’s sponsor.

“Ms. Goldstein is the best! She manages to help us out every week with the club, and she obviously is very busy with her own life but she takes time out of her day to come in and help us organize hundreds of dresses which is amazing.” Leul said.

There is a common process to be able to give girls these dresses, which Leul helped contribute to by packaging and spring up the dresses they received. Leul describes their accomplishments since freshman year.

“The club has been able to provide hundreds of dresses to girls across several different counties in Maryland every year including ours!” Leul said.

Along with their good achievements, they have expectations and hopes for this upcoming year.

Our club hopes to go all out this year and donate the most dresses we possibly can. I think we could improve our organization skills but that shouldn’t be a major problem!” Leul said.

This year the club is excited to kick off and help collect more dresses than last year.

“Join Becca’s closet!!! You will make someone very happy on their prom night!” Leul concludes.
