This Saturday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium, the Community Cupcakes Battle of the Bands will take place raising money for Hungry for Music, a non-profit organization whose mission is to “inspire underprivileged children (and others) by bringing positive musical and creative experiences into their lives.” It is $5 to get in and pizza will be sold before the show.
Community Cupcakes was born two years ago, shortly after the death of then eighth grader at Tilden Middle School, Luke Carter-Schelp, who was struck by a car and killed on Strathmore Ave. Not long before his death, Carter-Schelp made a casual comment to his mother, hoping there would be cupcakes at the event he was going to volunteer at. This inspired his mother to start Community Cupcakes to celebrate his life. Thus, every year on his birthday, Feb. 28, she organizes a community service or charity event in his honor.
