Despite the new additions to the team, coed volleyball is struggling with season so far with a record of 2-7. The difference in experience and playing against “stacked” teams proves as a disadvantage for the team. Stacking occurs when a team does not have enough players to make a good coed and a varsity boys volleyball team, therefore putting them in either one.
“The scores do not represent how we compete against other teams,” said Kathy Pao, a junior setter for the team. “We’ve improved a lot over the season and we have a lot of new players who have been learning the game really fast.”
Among the new additions to the team are Co-captain and freshman middle hitter Halid Hamadi, sophomore middle hitter Scott Goldman and senior offensive hitter Kevin Smith.
The coed volleyball team also faces the problem the varsity boys volleyball team faces: the metal bar installed across the gym.
“I do think it’s a problem because the ball hits the bar a couple of times during matches,” said Pao. “But as long as you track the ball it’s okay.”
With the most recent win against Richard Montgomery on April 22 and three more matches to go, the coed volleyball team still looks hopeful.
“I do hope we win more matches,” Pao said. “Experience does make a lot of difference.”
