Q&A With Newly Appointed Head Football Coach Jon Kadi

How long have you worked with WJ’s football team?
I started at WJ in May of 2008 as an assistant coach.

When did the interview process begin for the head football coach position?
The interview process started for me in the second week of June. The administration was searching for candidates in early June.

When did you find out that you had been chosen to be head football coach?
It was made official on Mon., [June]15 when I met with the administration and some of the returning players.

What experience and qualities do you have that you believe made you stand out during the interview process?
I think what stood out to the administration was my focus and leadership, as well as my commitment to the WJ community. I also played at the college level, which is experience that not all coaches have.

In what ways, if any, is your coaching style different from that of former head football Coach Tom Mulholland?
I played for and coached under Coach Mulholland. I have tremendous respect for him. Coach Mulholland started this program in the right direction, and we want to continue to build upon that, and take the next step. We as a staff will address areas that we were weak in, and try to continue to expand and grow upon our strengths.

Principal Christopher Garran said that looking for a new head football coach was about going in a different direction. How do you plan on taking the team in a new direction, and what changes do you plan on making as head coach?
We are going to start from within, starting with our coaches and players, we need to take pride in what we are doing, and work as hard as we can on and off the field to take this program to the next level.

How can the school support the football team in making these changes and succeeding?
I think the teachers will encourage these student athletes to excel in their chosen activities, just as we as coaches try to help them succeed in the classroom. It goes back to respect and pride. If our players are taking pride in their school work and classroom activities then the teachers are more likely to support them on the field.

Is there anything else you would like to tell the school about the football program?
Walter Johnson has updated their entire school including, but not limited to, the athletic fields, which are still under construction, a new weight room, locker rooms and gymnasium. These facilities are going to help us in attracting more kids to the football team which will be vital in the long term growth of the football program.

How do you see the football season going this fall?
I see this team competing and working as hard as we possibly can. Last season, this team was better than their record of 1-9, and the kids are hungry to prove that. It’s going to start with hard work and dedication.
