Outlook on the First Week of the NFL

Outlook on the First Week of the NFL

After the much anticipated start of the NFL season has come and gone, I will take this time to look back on the events that took place this past weekend.

First, the most hyped story of the offseason did not disapoint. Peyton Manning  made his Bronco debut against the Steelers, a rematch of last year’s wild card game. Manning went 19-26 with 253 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Broncos 19-31 win.

This year had more rookie QBs starting week one than any other in NFL history. Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tanahill, Brandon Weeden and Russell Wilson all had their chance to finally shine on the biggest stage. Unfortunatly for these young-ins, only Griffin III won his debut, and  in fact, he had the highest QBR rating for a rookie QB in his opening game in over five years. On the flip side Weeden had four interceptions and only 118 passing yards which is historically bad.

There were some big upsets in week one. The Packers, who had the best record last year in the regular season, fell in their opener to the 49ers.The Superbowl champion Giants, lost to the Cowboys. The Saints, who had not lost a agame at home last year lost, to the Redskins, in their home opener.

I predict that in the weeks to come, teams with high expectations, from everyone, going into the season such as the Eagles, Bills and Saints may struggle. Where teams that did not have high expectations such as the Redskins, Buccaneers and Rams will have success.

If week one is an indication, this is going to be a hell of a good NFL season.
