Spring Sports Preview

Baseball: The Boys’ Baseball squad enters the 2015 season under the direction of new head coach, Steve Sutherland, after the resignation of coach Christopher Murray last season. Sutherland has prior experience as the head coach of Whitman’s JV team for the previous eight years. Led by senior Ryan Manning and a talented junior class, the Cats also have two freshmen, Justin Hughes and Kyle Peterson, who will definitely help the team at Catcher and Pitcher/SS respectively. Cats baseball looks to improve on an 8-11 record from last season and progress into the 4A West Region tournament.

 Track and Field: The Track and Field Team hopes to make forward strides into 2015. On the boys’ side, junior Christian Campbell looks to repeat the magnificent season he had in 2014, where he posted a 400 meter time of 49.1 seconds. Itai Bezherano, who was ranked third in the 3200m at the 4A Indoor State Championships and Danny Parker, who was a state qualifier in the discus last year, expect to use their senior leadership in propelling a talented boys group. On the girls’ side, senior Kiernan Keller comes in fresh off an indoor 4A state championship victory in the 1600, where she posted a time of five minutes and one second, just short of the school record. Keller is joined by a strong army of girls who competed at the 2014 national track championships.

Boys’ Lacrosse: The Boys’ Lacrosse team lost some key senior leaders in 2014, a season they capped off with 13 wins and a deep run in the 4A west playoffs. However, their depth should result in yet another successful season in 2015, as they are led by senior Scott Salvatore and a strong army of juniors, including Patrick Nugent and Lewis Kirwan. The hungry squad looks to avenge their late playoff defeat to rival Winston Churchill High School this season.

Girls’ Lacrosse: After last year’s 8-3 regular season record and late defeat by Walt Whitman High School in the 4A West playoff, Girls’ Lacrosse is also entering their 2015 campaign hindered by the loss of many talented seniors, but are envisioning a rematch of last year’s playoff where they look to beat the Whitman Vikings. Now in his third year, head coach Gary Reburn looks to rebuild a talented group toward success.

Boys’ Tennis: Under the direction of second-year coach Mitchell Duque, Boys’ Tennis looks to thrive under the leadership of 2014 4A West finalists and seniors Justin New and Leo Bloomberg. The squad is also joined by a group of  talented freshman prospects. After a defeat in last year’s playoffs, the team looks to utilize their experience and fresh talent to capitalize in this 2015 season.

Boys’ Volleyball: Boys’ Volleyball is also hindered by 2014’s graduated seniors, as they enter the 2015 season with the absence of many key seniors from last year’s team. After a 6-6 record in 2014, Boys’ Volleyball looks to break the .500 winning barrier under the leadership of coach Brian Fairall.

4/20: WJ at Richard Montgomery

Co-ed Volleyball: After a 6-5 2014 campaign, the Co-Ed Volleyball team returns in 2015 under the direction of coach Bill Morris. A talented squad looks to avenge their first-round defeat by Whitman in the first round of 2014’s 4A West tournament, and will meet the  Vikings on Mar. 27.

Softball: After a rough 3-12 campaign in 2014, the softball team attempts to relinquish their struggles and win a consistent string of games in 2015. Head coach Jamie Ahearn begins her fifth year of coaching looking to turn a struggling squad into a competitive one.

4/20: B-CC at WJ

Gymnastics: The Gymnastics squad enters the 2015 season as the reigning county champions. Last year’s phenomenal season included five victories and a county championship win. Under head coaches Ursula Bright and Erika Aguilar, gymnastics looks to repeat their success from last year and bring home  their second consecutive MCPS crown.
