Do Something!

Just a hop, skip and a jump (over the turnstile) in D.C., this neighborhood has plenty to offer bored teenagers looking to grab a bite to eat and relax. Best of all, you can finally, finally stop shooting irritated looks over at the obnoxious group of sixth graders waiting for the family minivan to pick them up outside Barnes & Noble in Bethesda on Friday night. Only a short distance on the red line lies Cleveland Park, home to a myriad of restaurants and entertainment hotspots that everyone can enjoy. At the end of a satisfying evening, take pride in the fact that you supported a greener D.C. (if you used the Metro) and still have cash in your wallet.

Vace Italian Delicatessen is one of several Italian restaurants located in Cleveland Park on Connecticut Avenue that has superb food. Serving as a deli and grocery, this family-owned business offers an abundance of savory Italian dishes for very affordable prices. From pizza and subs to sandwiches and home-made pasta, Vace’s friendly staff and remarkable cuisine makes it a great place to start or finish your night.
Maybe you’re not really in the mood for Italian food. In that case, a little ways up the road is Spices Asian Restaurant and Sushi Bar. This regionally acclaimed restaurant has plenty of traditional Asian dishes on their menu, including some of the best sushi in all of Washington, D.C. Don’t let the stylish décor fool you: this place is actually quite affordable. A meal may cost you anywhere from $15-20, which is a good deal considering the quality of food.

If you’re in the mood for something a little more fancy and are willing to dish out the cash, you may want to swing by Dino rustic Italian restaurant. Even more enjoyable than trying to pronounce the names of dishes are the dishes themselves. Once again, be prepared to pay up, because a meal can cost anywhere from $20-30.

Now that you’ve satisfied your hunger, you and your friends want to hit the town and do something. How about seeing a hit movie on a 40-foot-tall, 70-foot-wide movie screen in the area’s biggest-screened, best-sounding, most comfortable and all-round ass-kicking-est theatre in D.C. today? If you’re looking for the ultimate cinematic adventure, the AMC Loews Uptown 1 Theatre is your ideal destination. The Uptown Theatre’s one movie screen is reminiscent of the era of giant, over the top movie palaces that were prominent in the early parts of the 20th century. A word to the wise: you might want to show up an hour before the show, because the seats sell out in a flash and the line gets extremely long, extremely fast. Don’t fret though-the long wait is worth the mind-explosion that is the Uptown Theatre experience.

Transportation: You could drive, but let’s face it: parallel parking is an unnecessary and tricky maneuver. Fortunately, we have other options on our side- go green and use the Metro! From the Bethesda station, or those right above it, take the Red Line headed towards Glenmont and get off at Cleveland Park.

 Cost:

If you’re venturing out after 7 p.m. on Friday or Saturday/Sunday before 2 a.m., you’ll reap the glorious benefits of reduced fare, paying no more than $2.35 one way.
