Katy Perry began her Superbowl performance with her hit “Roar.”

On Feb. 1, Katy Perry generated over 3 million tweets during her Pepsi Halftime Show during Super Bowl XLIX. It is understandable why viewers had so much to say-the performance was nothing short of a spectacle. Perry performed a medley of some of her biggest hits, including “Teenage Dream” and “Dark Horse.” The show featured special guests Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliot.

Perry started the set off strong, entering on a giant metallic tiger and belting her chart-topping song “Roar.”  The signer exuded confidence and certainly caught the audience’s attention. She then transitioned into the trap-influenced song, “Dark Horse,” which featured the most creative use of graphics ever seen during a halftime show. Differently colored blocks were projected on the field, making it appear to be moving up and down. Dancers in futuristic chess costumes added to the scene, creating a visually superior number.

Famed rock singer and guitarist Lenny Kravitz made his anticipated appearance to duet on Perry’s debut single, “I Kissed a Girl.” The pairing was an unusual yet enjoyable choice, as both delivered strong vocals and a passionate take on the song. The stage then transformed into a three-dimensional beach, complete with moving palm trees, dancing sharks and walking beach balls. The stage was once again lit by interesting graphics, including an ocean with continuous waves, taking the performance to the next level.  Perry also revealed her first costume change, a cute dress imitating a beach ball.

The performance took a turn for the worse when guest rapper Missy Elliot entered the stage.  Elliot was an odd choice for a guest star, since she isn’t nearly as current or successful as Perry. In fact, the MC has not released new content since 2005.  Elliot performed her own songs as Perry awkwardly danced and sang along in a ridiculously oversized hoodie, looking out of place during her own show. The “set within a set” went on for way too long, putting a damper on Perry’s performance.

Perry ended the show on a high note, belting her song “Firework” as she stood on a flying platform high above the crowd.  Fireworks flew from the stage as the crowd went wild. Although it would have been nice if Perry had sung a few more of her hits, it was the perfect ending to a triumphant performance. Perry showed the world just why her 64.4 million Twitter followers love her so much, why she has eight Billboard number one hits and why she is the Queen of Pop.
