After a long battle of trying to be free of her music contract, singer Kesha is filing for yet another appeal against Dr. Luke. The “Tik Tok” singer made claims in 2014 stating that the record producer Lukasz Gottwald, who goes under the name “Dr. Luke,” had emotionally abused her over the course of their working years.
In February 2016, Kesha’s trial took place where she wanted to cut ties with the producer for good and end their contract. The trial did not go in the singer’s favor as the the supreme court in Manhattan denied her request to terminate the contract and ruled that she would have to continue working with Dr. Luke until the contract term expired. After word spread that she lost the battle, people across the world voiced their opinions and the hashtag, #freekesha, was trending number one.
“Kesha did the right thing by trying to get out of her contract Dr. Luke was obviously a jerk to her so I don’t know why the court would not care,” junior Joey Heim said.
After a picture emerged onto the internet of Kesha’s reaction to the court’s decision, fans everywhere showed their support for the singer and even made their way to the Sony headquarters, where people were protesting and trying to give Kesha the justice she didn’t receive in the courtroom.
“I am appalled by the entire situation,” senior Ray Larizza said. “I think that for them to force her to work with someone who allegedly raped her, is extremely disgusting and degrading to her self esteem and for them to not break the contract is like a big punch in the face for Kesha – she came forward about something personal and they basically threw it back her and told her to suck it up.”
After the rough days, Kesha faced after hearing the decision, the singer remains positive and hopeful that she will get the justice she deserves and be able to find a new producer for her music. Currently, the singer is working on appealing the court’s original decision.
“It’s really good that she is getting a second chance, she deserves it,” junior Montana Gowell states. “She just wants to make music in a chill environment and the court shouldn’t deny her that.”
