J.J. Abrams to direct Star Wars: Episode IX

%0A

After the great success of “The Force Awakens,” J.J. Abrams returned to direct the newest addition to the Star Wars franchise, “The Last Jedi.” Some were elated by the news, while others are disappointed with the choice of director.

A lot of people felt satisfied that the movie had a different cast and introduced new characters.

“I liked that  [The Force Awakens] didn’t go hand in hand with the other movies,” junior Patricia Cuff said.

Many appreciated the different plot and characters that Abrams introduced in “The Force Awakens”. They offered variety and a new take on the classic movie series. Freshman David Eller enjoyed the way the newest movie played out and is looking forward to see what Abrams brings to the table in the next film.

“The story was interesting,” Eller said.

Cuff also took notice as to how Abrams incorporated new technology into the filming.

“I thought it was really cool how they brought in CGI and special effects,” Cuff said.

CGI or computer-generated imagery is what Abrams chose to use for the outfits of the storm troopers, the soldiers from the Galactic Empire. These outfits were almost completely computer-generated, along with other aspects of the film. Cuff thought that the new look provided a more kid-friendly approach because to her, children tend to like more life-like characteristics.

“Everything is slightly different and a lot more likable to younger kids,” Cuff said.

Both Eller and Cuff are sure they will see the upcoming movie and are excited for Abrams to influence the film.

Although these students may be thrilled about Abrams, others are not so happy.

“His modern take on it is a disgrace to the classics everyone knows and loves,” said junior Samantha Heald.

Heald wasn’t pleased at the way Abrams goes about directing and felt he doesn’t respect the original movies and the magic they bring to many. Although some may feel CGI brings variety and detail, some feel that it takes away some of the vintage tone.

Many think that “The Force Awakens” lost the uniqueness that other “Star Wars” films have brought and are nervous for whether “The Last Jedi” will bring about the same problem.

“I’m a bit skeptical of it considering how unoriginal The Force Awakens was,” a sophomore who wishes to remain nameless said.

He felt that the script wasn’t different and exciting like the originals were. Each movie had brought a different theme and he didn’t think that “The Force Awakens” really did that. Even though he isn’t certain of Abrams and his ability to create a remarkable movie, he is hopeful that “The Last Jedi” will meet his expectations.

Students who feel the same opinions think he will have a more original script to work with. They have faith that in this movie, Abrams will be able to deliver with a better screenplay and keep the Star Wars franchise intact. It also helps the sophomore gain confidence in the movie because of Abrams’ other work.“Super 8” and “Star Trek” . He feels assured in the quality of the new Star Wars movie because of Abrams’ the other works .

Abrams may have gotten mixed reviews, but in the end, “The Last Jedi” is sure to be a hit.
