Up at Bat: If you could go to the Olympics for any sport, which would you choose?

Do you wonder what sports your fellow students, especially those who are not even into sports, would participate in in the Olympics?

This is one of those inquires with the potential to yield fun – and often unexpected – answers from nearly everyone. Most of us have considered the possibility of going to the Olympics, at least when we were little kids watching them on TV. It seems like many young kids who have played a sport for only a year think about going to that international competition someday. Other people who have stuck with sports for years, and they are not planning on going to the Olympics.

Now, to wonder whether or not trying to get into the Olympics is even worth it is a question for another day. But what if it was 100 percent ‘worth it’? What if getting into the Olympics was somehow possible for you? Assuming that you were given a chance to be in the Olympics, what sport would you do? A sport you have practiced for years, or a completely different one, that you always wished you could do? You might know you are good at some sports, but do you enjoy any of them? Maybe there is a sport you never wanted to play that you suddenly would if you had a chance.

At one point, I was pretty good at running, but I don’t enjoy it or practice it enough, so I have probably gotten worse over the years. My first instinct in answering this question would be to say that ice skating is a sport I would do in the Olympics, because I used to skate and have always enjoyed it. However, if I could suddenly find myself excelling at any one sport well enough to get to the Olympics, I would choose diving. Not that I would ever do repeated flips off a 30-foot-high platform in real life, but if I was suddenly good at it, that’s a sport that I think would be really fun. After all, it doesn’t require nearly as much strenuous, uncomfortable exercise as running. In fact, come to think of it, it probably feels like flying.
