Student Government 101: A Wrap-Up of the Freshman and Sophomore Classes

The Freshman Class

By Sabrina Clarke

President Diana Horvath, Vice President Jeremy Ebobisse, Secretary Seungyeon Jung and Treasurer Isa Herold led the freshman class of 2015 during the 2011-2012 school year.

Although they all felt as though the year went well, there were still aspects that they felt they could have improved on, such as their homecoming hallway.

Horvath admitted that the officers didn’t know how to execute some things as well as they hoped.

The freshman class officers said their biggest accomplishment of the year was raising $400 from working at concession stands during the spring sports season.

With time and dedication, the officers achieved many of their goals, such as getting the class incorporated in events, over the course of the year.

The officers said even though they are just freshmen, they were still able to achieve what the other officers could. The tools they needed to successfully achieve their goals are centered around the idea of being independent.

Over the course of the year, the freshman class officers found they had a lot of independence. In addition, they didn’t seek much assistance from class advisers Karina Bond and Joe Thompson.

The Sophomore Class

By Wahid Ishrar

The sophomore class officers were President Quentin Auster, Vice President Kyle Lopez, Secretary Camille David and Treasurer Chase Keller. They are now wrapping up their first year as officers.

Lopez will serve as Junior class President for the year of 2012, while David will retain her position as Secretary.

After being elected to their respective offices, their first goal was to make sure that one of them was present at every Montgomery County Region (MCR) meetings, something that the previous 2014 class officers failed to do. They are all proud of what they accomplished this year and look forward to working together again in years to come.

“I think we represented our class with pride,” says Keller.

They said that they work and interact well as a team, and have a lot of fun doing so. They also aided WJ’s efforts in fundraising for Pennies for Patients. The officers believe that this has been their biggest accomplishment  thus far.

They are all planning on running for office next year, however, there are not running for all of the same positions. Auster is running for Treasurer, David for Secretary, Keller for Vice President and Lopez for President.

As none of the sophomore class officers had previously held a position, they faced some challenges. As a result, David said the officers should have spent more time interacting with the sophomore class as a whole.

As advice to possible candidates, Keller said, “Be prepared, make flyers [and] get your name out there.”
