Teacher of the Week: Maggie McSorley

Teacher of the Week: Maggie McSorley

This is Maggie McSorley’s third year teaching at WJ. She currently teaches on-level Algebra 2, and sponsors the Math Honor Society, though she will pass that position down to fellow math teacher Rachel Attner in the fall. McSorley is not officially affiliated with any WJ sports, although she has done volunteer coaching for Track & Field.

What are your interests outside of school?

MM: I do stained glass as one of my hobbies, I like playing Scrabble or Words with Friends. I [also] like going on hikes and enjoying nature.

Do you have any favorite television shows or movies?

MM: I’m a fan of “The Big Bang Theory,” I have been enjoying that lately. And [I like] “NCIS,” definitely. And “Bones.” [But] I don’t go out to movies very much, but I think my favorite movie of all time is Shawshank Redemption.

How did you get into working on stained glass?

MM: My father did stained glass, and so I remember sitting out as a kid with him in the garage, and he’d let me put foil on a piece of glass. I’d feel so important because I got to touch the glass and I knew it was dangerous, but he let me do it, it was just a fun childhood thing that I remember.

Can you describe a typical Saturday for yourself?

MM: [I] wake up early, eat my oatmeal, mow the lawn, run the laundry, go to Costco, take a walk. Maybe instead of driving the car to Giant to go shopping, I’ll walk to Giant and bring a backpack and make it an adventure. Maybe meet up with friends, get together [and] play Scrabble. Maybe have a fire in my gazebo out back, and play guitar and just chill.

What are some things you would like to accomplish during your lifetime?

MM: I don’t know. I haven’t really thought about, overall, in the world what I want my goals to be. That’s one thing I need to kind of consider, but right now I’m just hoping students have a better experience in school. Sometimes students really hate school, can you imagine that? But some people do hate school, and having teachers that they know care about them and support them…I think I can contribute in that way.
