Club Profile: Fellowship of Christian Athletes

One of the newest clubs this year at WJ is the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a ministry of students based on an athletic platform, created by juniors Angelina Bingei and Kendra Allgood. With the first meeting held during lunch in the dance studio at the beginning of the month, the club already has 15 core members. Bingei and Allgood have promoted their club through word of mouth and interested students often bring a friend to the meetings.

“It is a place where Christians, athletic or not, can have fellowship and a kind of family at school,” said Allgood.

Within their first three meetings, members have discussed upcoming plans to attend WJ sports events as a club. Additionally, the club is planning outreach events such as a food or coat drive and holiday card making for community members and WJ staff. The club also participates in student-lead Bible discussions.

“These studies are nice because this isn’t a group that has all the answers [to life questions], and it’s not just one person lecturing—we have a lot of questions and we learn from each other,” said Bingei.

Since the club centers on a controversial topic of religion, many people are skeptical of the club’s function and structure.

“People question our motives and don’t really understand why we would want to start a club for something we can just do at church, but this is different from church and we just hope people come to a meeting and find out what we’re all about,” said Allgood.

According to Bingei, the club is a branch off of the global ministry of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the largest sports organization in the world that  focuses on serving local communities by equipping and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ.

“It is a very different feeling from a classroom setting because you know you share something very important with these people,” said Allgood. “Also, meeting people you would never have talked to otherwise and realizing you have quite a bit in common is a really cool feeling.”

Note: Due to its religious affiliation, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is not officially a school sponsored club.
