Annual blood drive kicks off the giving season

Annual+blood+drive+kicks+off+the+giving+season

Each year at WJ, the blood drive provides gallons of blood for people in need. Students can sign up for a scheduled appointment and then nurses from INOVA, a local nursing company, come and draw their blood. After, the donors are required to sit for 30 minutes, then report back to class. There are certain requirements for students who give blood, but many students are eager to do so.

Senior Grace Hazlett is in the leadership class group that runs and organizes the blood drive.

According to Hazlett, the process for setting up the blood drive and having a successful year is sometimes hard.

“We host with INOVA and a good deal of the organization is handled by their employees. The actual donation process can take up to an hour, so leadership students circulate around to keep them company and calm their nerves,” Hazlett said.

Over the years, the blood drive has remained popular, with all of the student spots getting filled each year.

“I think the blood drive is so popular because students have the opportunity to save lives in an easy and extremely rewarding way,” Hazlett said.

Senior Olivia Beach participated in the blood drive this year. She said she is proud to support her school and take part in an event for a good cause.

“I decided to participate because it was for a good cause and you got to miss some school with your fellow classmates,” Beach said.

There are certain requirements students must meet in order to give blood.

“In order to participate, you needed a permission form signed by your parent and you needed to answer a check list to make sure you were safe to donate,” Beach said.

The WJ community is happy and willing to donate whatever they can in order to help people in need.
