Music was in the air after school on Fri, Apr. 22.
French Honor Society (FHS) and Spanish Honor Society (SHS) hosted a joint “Open Mic Night” in the Student Commons, featuring comedy, songs and food representing the cultures of both languages.
Citing the desire to create a cross-cultural experience for members, FHS Co-President Carly Meyers said that participation in the event was mandatory for all FHS members. As a result, food–ranging from cupcakes decorated as the French flag to colorful fruit–was abundant.
“A few of our members brought some food traditionally from Spanish speaking countries,” senior and SHS President Rachel Slover said. “It’s a nice way to share culture.”
FHS sponsor and French teacher Ryan Martinez, along with juniors and FHS members Dara Schweitzer and Maya Peiris-Scheirer, performed a multitude of French songs while onlookers munched on croissants and brownies. Other members sang duets, played violin and more.
Slover, along with SHS officer Ryan Cirillo, performed a trio of jokes in Spanish, explaining their meaning to an audience of mostly FHS members.
“A lot of our members couldn’t come because they are involved in sports and other things,” Slover said.
The event lasted over an hour and included the painting of a vibrant ceiling tile with the names of the attendees.
