Home- On Mon. Feb. 4, Pennies for Patients entered its first full week at WJ in the 2012-2013 school year. Throughout the month of February, the WJ community, headed by the SGA officers and the leadership class, is hoping to beat its previous record of almost $58,000 and defend its title as first in the nation. United States- On Mon. Feb. 4, the Alabama hostage shootout involving a five-year-old child ended with the death of the gunman. Jimmy Lee Dykes, the shooter, was keeping the boy hostage in an underground bunker until troops stormed in and shot him, rescuing the child. He is currently being treated at a local hospital, but appeared to be physically unharmed. (Source: The New York Times)
Globe- On Wed. Feb. 6, a gunman shot and killed opposition leader Chokri Belaid in Tunis, Tunisia outside of Beliad’s home. Before his assassination, Belaid had received numerous death threats because of the fact he had openly criticized Tunisia’s Islamist-led government. The death of Belaid shocked the nation, and sparked protests from its people, some which have turned deadly. (Source: CNN)
