Home- On Wed. May 1, WJ hosted its fifth annual “Screen on the Green,” which featured Disney’s animated film, “Mulan.” The SGA posted flyers all aroud the school, urging people to attend the event, which event attracted around 100 people. The event was held on the WJ side field from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Drinks and snacks were provided and families of WJ students were welcomed to the event as well.
United States- On Wed. May 1, the FBI accused three new people likely involved in the Boston Marathon Bombings of removing evidence from the suspect’s dorm room, throwing off the investigation. The FBI filed charges against Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev who are being charged with conspiring to obstruct justice, while Robel Phillipos has been charged with making false statements. All three were college friends of Tsarnaev. According to the police documents, the trio left his dorm room with a backpack containing firework tubes that had been emptied of their explosive powder. Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev were detained more than a week ago for immigration charges, and did not seek bail. They were ordered to be held until a May 14 hearing. Phillipos is currently being held until a detention hearing Mon. May 6. (Source: NBC news)
Globe- On Thurs. May 2, Kenneth Bae, an American citizen, was sentenced to 15 years of labor in North Korea for “committing hostile acts against its government.” Bae ran a tour business out of China and was arrested in northeastern North Korea in November after leading a group of businessmen there from Yanji, China. Bae’s hearing was on Tues. April 30 and North Korea’s Supreme Court ruled that he committed “hostile acts” against Pyongyang’s government. After his hearing, Bae was sentenced to 15 years in a labor camp.The current charge is a lesser charge than the original, trying to overthrow the government, which could have resulted in the death penalty. He is the ninth American abductee by North Korea since 2009.
