WJ encourages healthy living at inaugural health fair

On January 12, WJ held its first ever health fair in the main gym. The health fair featured students who are currently enrolled in health classes and have spent the past semester researching specific topics like bulimia, distracted driving, depression and more. Students set up their research around the gym with presentations, games and prizes to try and help students and staff visiting from around the school understand more about the topics at hand.

Senior Adriana Marroquin researched bulimia nervosa and enjoyed participating in the event.

“I think that participating in the health fair helped students understand things that happen on a daily basis but that most of us don’t really know is happening,” Marroquin said.

Along with research projects, there were two stations set up in the gym where students could experience what a distracted driver sees behind the wheel. Students could put on goggles that impaired vision to really see how drugs and alcohol impact drivers.

“It really showed the dangers of driving under the influence,” senior Montana Gowell said at the event. “When I put the goggles on I really couldn’t tell what I was doing. It was pretty scary.”

The health fair was an overall success in the opinion of the participants and opened the eyes of many students to all different types of problems. Students and staff around the building learned a lot about health topics and had an informative time learning.

“I think [the health fair] is a great idea… the students put in a lot of hard work and it enabled them to share what they learned with everyone else,” gym teacher Shelli Hill said.
