Point-Counterpoint: Prometheans Revolutionize Classroom Potential

“Incredible” is the only way to describe WJ’s reaction to the new Promethean boards. The 40 boards given to our school by MCPS have gained the attention of all students and teachers, and for good reason. These boards will take WJ into a new era of modern education, allowing unparalleled progress in the classroom. The endless possibilities and functions of the boards give teachers new and exciting abilities to impact and convey information to students.

For example, a teacher can now organize weeks of lessons on the boards and use built-in tools to arrange eye-catching and effective demonstrations and lectures. Videos, picture and graphs can be brought up on the fly, making classes more efficient than ever before.

Best of all, once teachers get excited about the potential of the boards, that excitement will transfer through to their students, stimulating a learning environment that was once fueled by boredom. Introducing these boards also puts the out-dated black and white overhead projectors used to rest.

Principal Christopher Garran thinks that the Prometheans are a very important piece of equipment to have in the school.

“Things have changed; it’s not chalkboards anymore,” he said. “We’re trying to bring WJ up to date and make it a state-of-the-art facility and the Prometheans can be part of that equation.”
If some condemn the boards because of their large price tag, they should consider the large amount of the equipment the boards will replace. Just one board can complete the tasks of dozens, if not more, of classroom devices.

Promethean Boards bring a new cutting edge system to WJ, one that helps students visually learn and promotes participation; something you can’t get from a plain old white board. The teachers and students have such great faith in the new boards, with apologies to Prometheus, they’re sure they won’t get burned.
