Too Old For Halloween?

Every year, the most wonderful holiday in the fall comes at the end of October: Halloween. Ever since I was young, I would go out every 31st and travelled door-to-door for free candy. I’d come home, stuff my face and inevitably get sick. As I grow up, though, I increasingly hear from many of my peers that they are “too old for Halloween.”

This couldn’t be farther from the truth. Who could ever grow too old so that they don’t want free candy? That’s like getting too old for fun. Trick-or-treating is definitely acceptable in society from infancy to about the early-twenties.

But of course, Halloween is for more than just candy. Several different groups, such as the non-profit organization UNICEF, use trick-or-treating to help others. People can order free boxes from the UNICEF website in order to collect change instead of candy. UNICEF specifically brings medication, food, water and other necessities to children in over 150 countries. No one is too old to give to charity.

It’s possible that people are growing too old for dressing up like princesses or vampires and prancing around. People don’t want to dress up because it is often too hard to get a unique or creative costume. They are out of ideas, or buying a costume is too expensive. Peer pressure also dissuades people from costumes. If someone’s friends aren’t trick-or-treating and would rather stay at home, then that person is also less likely to go out themselves.

Some people still wear costumes and eat candy, but rather than trick-or-treating, they have Halloween parties. Parties are the reason that older people don’t trick-or-treat, because it is socially acceptable for adults to go to parties. Otherwise we would have men and women in their 30s, 40s and 50s going around asking for candy. Despite this fact, I feel that while we are still in our teens we should enjoy what little youth we still have and go trick-or-treating.

With so few years of trick-or-treating left for us, why waste it? Besides, once you get old enough, you’ll have plenty of years to go to Halloween parties with friends. Just remember, when Halloween rolls around, that you’ll always have parties, but you won’t always have trick-or-treating.
