Movie Review: “Frozen”

With the temperature in Maryland being lower than in Alaska, it’s nice to escape the tundra of Bethesda by catching a movie.  I would suggest going to see Disney’s “Frozen.” “Frozen” has been the top of the box office for a while and had almost grossed $350 million, it after seeing it, it’s pretty obvious why. I grew up watching the original, hand-drawn Disney movies, and haven’t seen any of the new movies like “Princess and the Frog” (2009) or “Tangled” (2010) so I had no idea what this movie would be like. It was overall a pretty good movie, not my favorite, but definitely better than I expected.

Let’s get the bad stuff out of the way. You want a realistic or unexpected plot? You want developed characters with multiple sides to them and legitimate reactions? You want an ending you didn’t see coming? Too bad.  “Frozen” has none of these things. It’s a Disney movie, so of course it’ll be magical and utopian, and everything is solved with love. The characters aren’t completely one-dimensional, but they, and their actions, have very little depth.

Now on to the positives. “Frozen” is vivid and amazing to watch. It’s animated, but the world is so visually stunning it just seems real and fantastic. The soundtrack to the movie is catchy, perhaps one of the best Disney soundtracks ever. The plot of the movie takes place in the kingdom of Arendelle, where two princesses are kept inside the castle. The older, Elsa, has magical ice powers that she can’t control, and hides in fear of hurting others. The younger, Anna, is an adventurous girl who has been kept in the castle her entire life. When Elsa’s coronation comes, the castle is opened for the first time in years. Elsa tries to hide her powers, but the evening takes an unexpected turn as her ice magic is revealed and she flees from the town, and when she loses control of her powers she accidentally turns summer into winter. It is up to Anna to go into the icy tundra and find Elsa to bring back summer and save Arendelle. The story is fun, albeit childish, but even if you are an adult you can find some parts to enjoy and laugh at. Everything about this movie brings out nostalgia, and while it’s simple and obvious, the story is touching and leaves audiences with a good feeling.

“Frozen” is worth watching, if not just for the experience. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. It is just the movie to warm you up during this below zero weather.
