WJ Football disappoints with homecoming loss

WJ+Football+disappoints+with+homecoming+loss

The homecoming football game is one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year. This year,WJ faced their biggest rivals, Whitman High School. WJ came into Friday’s game with a 3-4 record, and had won two in a row. Whitman stood at 4-3. WJ was very confident coming into the game, winning three of their last four.

The Wildcats went down 7-0 in the first few minutes of the game, and it only got worse. The Wildcats’ offense was non existent, not scoring anything in the first half, and their defense allowed two more touchdowns by the end of the half.

“We were caught up in the hype of homecoming,” junior center Brian Williams said. “We came in confident, and it was too confident as we failed to make the big plays.”

The final score was 34-7. However, there was a bright spot in the game which was their lone touchdown in the 4th quarter. Freshman quarterback Andrew Markey threw a touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Aziz Diomande to make it 34-6, and senior kicker Nathaniel Turak made the PAT.

WJ had a lot of problems. They dropped passes, couldn’t stop the rush and couldn’t execute in the red zone on defense or offense.

The Wildcats’ game-plan all year about going to the basics, and being mentally tough. Players and the head coach agree about how the game went.

“We just had a bad game,” coach Charles Woolridge said, “we just weren’t focused.”

“We just need to be tougher,” junior wide receiver Connor Phelps said. “We had a gameplan and we didn’t execute it.”

With a record of 3-5 and two games left in the year, the Wildcats will face division rivals BCC and Churchill High Schools. The Wildcats are extremely confident, as both teams have struggled this year with a combined 3-13 record.

“We have a lot of grit,” Williams said. “We have two games against our rivals, and the team’s going to be pumped up for the last two games. We’re going to be 5-5.”
