Seven seniors graduate this year including Paul Okeyo, Tony Scarnecchia and John Ramsey who placed fourth, fifth and sixth respectively in the county tournament held on Feb. 20 and the 21. The Regional tournament is on Feb. 27-28 and the State tournament on March 6-7.
Okeyo, who finished fourth, voiced his disappointment with his performance.
“I lost matches that I wasn’t supposed to,” he said. “It was a terrible performance.”
Okeyo, who won counties last year, posted second in the regionals and fifth in States.
The team finished with a 19-11 record for the season. Coach Tom Wheeler has an overall positive outlook on his team’s performance this season.
“This is a stronger, more complete team than in other years,” he said.
Okeyo looks ahead to the regional tournament.
“I will worry about states when we get there,” he said. “I really have to work for the regionals.”
Wheeler and Okeyo both eyed freshmen Elad Covaliu as a hopeful for the team, who placed second in the JV tournament. Junior Patrick Teixeira and freshman Will Greenan have also won over 20 matches during the season.
For Wheeler, coaching wrestling is a responsibility he enjoys.
“[Wrestling] is the purest sport since it is individual in a team framework,” he said.
Okeyo only had four words to say when it came down to wrestling.
“I live to win,” he said.
