Varsity Girls Soccer: Sept. 8, 2-6

The girls varsity soccer team’s first game of the season was a pressing game, being against Wootton, a team that has always been tough to beat. Within the first minute of the game, Wootton had already taken the lead 1-0. Only four minutes later, Wootton scored a second goal to make it 2-0.

The crowd thought that after the opponent’s first two goals, everything would go down hill. But senior forward Chaucia Sydnor sent the ball flying right in front of the goal from a corner kick. Senior defender and co-captain Lauren Levine got in front of the ball and was able to head it in to the goal to bring WJ within one point of the Patriots.

Two minutes after WJ’s first goal, sophomore Caroline Hagerty scored the second and last goal for WJ, giving WJ hope for a few mere minutes.

Although the girls expected the first game to be difficult, they believed they had an advantage because of new coach Liz Friedman.

“Liz knows a lot about the game,” said senior co-captain and midfielder Catherine Madden. “She knows Wootton’s style because she played for them [when she was in high school] so we felt more confident playing them.”

Even though the girls played a tough game, Wootton eventually broke the tie, and ended the game 2-6.
