Varsity Field Hockey: Sept. 21, 2-1

At a night when revenge was in the air, WJ couldn’t seize the moment 2-1. After coming up just short to B-CC last year (1-0) for the title of regional champs,–WJ played Quince Orchard for the regional championship and lost 2-0. WJ had something to prove.  With an undefeated record and the third ranking (courtesy of The Gazette), the girls field hockey team eyed the top spot in 4A South which was currently held by B-CC.

“It was the perfect time for us to make a statement, to beat the B-CC Barons,” said junior forward Rachel Skay.

Defense was the key to the first half. With both teams trying to draw first blood, WJ quickly gained the advantage with early shots on the twine, controlling the ball. Unfortunately for WJ, their shots could not find the back of the net. Things were similar for the Barons, causing the teams to be deadlock 0-0 at the end of the first half.

The second half was different. Four minutes into half, sophomore midfielder Hannah Flesch scored to take a 1-0 lead.

“Our mentality [was] to control the ball and win,” said Skay.

However, things didn’t work out quite the way the Wildcats planned. Just a mere minute after WJ struck success, B-CC fired right back by scoring a goal, knotting the match up 1-1.

Two halves weren’t enough and the game went into overtime.

Just four minutes into OT, B-CC buried the Wildcats, scoring the winning goal, crushing the team’s hope for a perfect season.

“I was just happy to prove to everyone that we are for real, even if came up short,” said Skay.
