Fall Sports Wrap-Ups: Varsity Boys Soccer

After finishing the regular season with a decent 6-7 record, the boys soccer team fiercely beat Richard Montgomery 6-1 in the first round of playoffs on Halloween night. Despite the losing record the team entered the playoffs with, they were still able to be succesfull and display their strength and capabilities

Throughout the season, team faced many obstacles and challenges as they weren’t able to get on a consistent winning streak. As the numbers show, they went through occasional ups and downs, lagged with steadiness.

“At first we had a big challenge with consistency,” said coach Mike Williams.

Eventually, the players realized their weaknesses and were able to step up, making Williams and the captains very proud.

“Seniors stepped up their leadership and level of game; some were put in different positions from what they were used to,” said senior co-captain Matt Wojnar, who plays as a defender and midfielder.

The team was able to find success in a handful of outstanding victories that came against rivals Whitman (1-0) and Churchill (5-0).

The team’s talent shined every game, making their dilemma over “game-readiness” only a mild set-back. By learning through Williams’ coaching style, the players were able to shake off the inconsistency and play full games without letting up their focus – a big necessity coming into playoffs.

“In general, I’m very proud of the fabulous games they played during playoffs,” said Williams. “They played attractive ball.”

Facing Northwest was a big challenge for the team, having lost to the Jaguars in the regular season 4-1. As anticipated, the boys lost 4-2 to Northwest during the playoff game on Nov. 3. Yet,  they still played their best game, coming on strong and keeping their consistency.

“I’m proud that we came back to tie it up 2-2,” said Wojnar. “But we should’ve been able to hold up to win the game.”

With eight seniors leaving the team this year, next year’s team will still be strong with talent but face the obstacle of being a young team.

“[The rising varsity] need to learn quickly,” said senior goalkeeper Johnny Marshall.

Williams is ready to coach a fresh batch of players next season, and is excited to see what they bring to the varsity team.

“It’ll be interesting next year,” said Williams. “I look forward to seeing who will step up after losing talent and leadership from the previous year.”
