Field Hockey Recap: Oct. 2 – Oct. 7

The varsity field hockey team has started off their season well, with seven wins and only two losses. The team’s latest big victory was an 8-0 shutout against Rockville. The Lady Wildcats also had a tremendous shutout on Sept. 27 against Gaithersburg, with a final score of 12-0. While the team does have multiple shutout wins on this season’s record, many of their games have ended with fewer shots on goal and more even scores.

After WJ’s one-goal victory against Richard Montgomery on Saturday, Oct. 2, the team looked for areas of improvement.

“We played well together as a team and every person did their part,” said senior captain and goalkeeper Marjorie McCurry. “We just need to work on finishing our shots so we can score more.”

Coach Erika Murray said, “Passing use was good, and we played a good game.”

In the game against Rockville, the Lady Wildcats dominated with a score of 8-0.

Senior Alexis Wang, who plays right forward, said,  “It was a close game and the whole team worked well together on the field.”

The field hockey team had just one more game to dominate.  Playing Churchill, a school considered a key WJ rival, WJ emerged victorious, beating the Bulldogs 3-2.

Overall, Murray wants the team to look to those more difficult match-ups.

“We’re doing very well, but we do need to work on clutch games.”
