Hockey Rallies to Tie Poolesville

The WJ hockey team tied Poolesville last Friday 5-5 despite outshooting their opponents 64-14.

The Wildcats gave up goals on three of Poolesville’s first four shots, even though coming into the game Poolesville had only one win on the season. When goalie Emerson Smith entered the game, he allowed two goals on 10 shots, helping to get the Wildcats back into the game.

At the offensive end, WJ tallied a staggering 64 shots on goal, yet only scored five goals in the contest. Sophomore right wing Jessy Gendelman attributed the disparity of shots to goals to a lack of quality chances.

“We had a lot of shots, but we didn’t shoot to score,” said Gendelman.

WJ started the season off with four straight wins, but has come away with only one point in their last two games. One reason for this, Gendelman says, is overconfidence.

“I think we came into the game thinking that we were going to win and let it get to us,” said Gendelman. “We need to be more focused.”

Next week, the Wildcats take on Blair, currently in fifth place in the county. It will be a crucial game for playoff implications.
