Hockey Closes the Season Strong, Prepares for Playoffs

The WJ hockey team clinched a playoff berth last Friday, their first since the 2006-2007 season, after defeating by a score of 8-1 the RM Co-op team, made up of players from RM, Magruder, and Rockville.

The Wildcats were led by senior center Vinnie Peratrovich and sophomore right wing Jessy Gendelman, who each notched hat tricks in the runaway Wildcat victory. Freshman goaltender Emerson Smith turned away 19 of 20 shots, allowing the only RM goal with 1:17 left in the second period.

WJ started off the game quickly, scoring their first goal at 2:36 into the game. The teamscored five unanswered goals through the first and second period and never looked back.

“We definitely came out ready to play,” said Gendelman. “We came out hard and didn’t look back because it was a crucial game.”

Sophomore right wing Tyson Glover agreed that the team played hard the whole game.

“Everyone got a lot of playing time and went 110% on every shift,” said Glover.

As for the playoffs, the team faced Wootton last Friday, the no. 1 seed in the county, falling 4-1 despite an astounding effort by Emerson Smith who made 44 saves. They will play again tomorrow in the first round of the playoffs.

Sophomore defenseman Drew Ohlrich said that the team really needs to focus on defense to be successful against Wootton.

“They probably have one of the best players in the state,” said Ohlrich. “We really need to make sure we know where to be in the defensive zone.”
