Softball Updates: Whitman and Churchill

Games: April 4 vs. Whitman, April 6 at Churchill

Score: 2-3 Loss, 1-2 Loss

Highlights: Against Whitman, junior centerfielder Sarah Bernstein got two base-hits, by laying down bunts, running out the throws made by the Vikings and hitting a base-hit from the right-side of the plate towards the end of the game. Against Churchill, senior co-captain Katie Levingston went 2-4 at the plate and junior Bethany Buel went 2-3 at the plate and pitched seven strikeouts.

MVP: Sarah Bernstein (Whitman), Bethany Buel (Churchill)

Player’s Insight: (Against Whitman) “We adjusted well to the pitcher and we were able to take advantage of bases whenever possible,” said junior Sarah Bernstein. “What we need to work on is quickening up our transitions to execute our throws. Coming within one run of them was a huge improvement from last year, though. We really turned the game around and didn’t get discouraged if they got a few early runs.”

Coach’s Insight: Against Whitman: “I was very pleased with how we played and our willingness to play strong through the end,” said coach Jamie Ahearn. “We almost came back to win in the bottom of the seventh. We still need to work on some minor errors, nothing I’m too worried about, but those can be the difference in a win and a loss. And, we need to continue to push ourselves with the bat. We are hitting well but I’m hoping for more consistency at the plate and getting more clutch base-hits,” said Ahearn.

While most five-year-old kids were reading The Berenstain Bears, Jessica Evans was busy reading The Pitch. Her older brother, Chad, was the Editor-in-Chief of The Pitch during the ’92-’93 school year. From an early age she knew that she was destined to follow in her brother’s glorious footsteps and become an esteemed member of The Pitch. Her childhood dream became a reality when she joined The Pitch staff this year, her senior year, and was named the Online Editorial Editor. Jessica also became the first ever columnist for “The Bullpen,” which is her pride and joy. When Jessica isn’t absorbed in the journalism world, she enjoys watching horrible reality television, being a counselor at Camp Twin Creeks, running, hanging out with friends, seeing Broadway musicals and supporting her beloved Boston Red Sox. She will miss her Pitch family incredibly next year, but plans to carry the lessons that Ms. Gates and Sylvie Ellen have taught her while studying journalism and communications at a university that shall be named later. Her sincere hope is to live in New York City, after graduating college, and walk the streets as the next Carrie Bradshaw.
