WJ Field Hockey Senior Night

*This article has been corrected since published.

The WJ Varsity field hockey team has only one game left in their regular season, as co-county champions with Churchill and BCC. The team is led by their seniors, Hannah Flesch, Claire Cohen, Rylee Genner, Barbara Issiakou, Charlotte Kirwan, Karen Mata, Ashley Sawyers, Emily Smithers, and Taylor Swift who all have leadership roles.

This past Tuesday they played their senior night game at home against Springbrook. WJ took control of the game, dominated play and won three to zero.

Coach Erika Murray knows how they’ve been able to accomplish so much.

“They work very hard together, and they get along well on the field because they know that all differences are put aside once they step on the field,” she said.

Coach Murray says that it is not a surprise that her team is so successful. “[The seniors] stepped into the leadership role as a group,” she said. “We did away with captains this year, because each of them has leadership qualities that they could bring to the team.”

The team’s final game is on Monday, Oct. 24 at Poolesville. In the playoffs, the Field Hockey team also looks to avenge their one and only loss to BCC.

“I really have a good feeling about the team going far this year,” said senior Taylor Swift.
