On Monday, Oct. 17, the WJ girls varsity soccer team defeated Churchill in a game that ended in a 2-1 victory.
Churchill was first to score, when an outside shot was kicked and dropped by the goalkeeper close to the line. The ref called that it landed behind the line, and Churchill was on the scoreboard with a 1-0 lead. This was the only goal Churchill scored.
WJ came back to tie the game when junior forward Sydney Calas kicked a short corner that was volleyed in by junior defender Cori Caggiano. With the score 1-1 the Wildcats picked up the pace and scored a second goal. Senior forward Caroline Hagerty crashed into Churchill’s goalkeeper so sophomore forward Tenni Idler dribbled it out and tapped it in, bringing the Wildcats to victory over Churchill, 2-1.
“Going into any game, we want to win,” said Calas. “And [we] won.”
Calas was very proud of the team’s effort and overall win. From this win, the girls soccer team now has a record of 7-3-2.
