Varsity baseball finished with an 8-10 record last year. While that was an improvement from the previous year, it’s still not where they want to be. They have plenty of talent, including 10 seniors and a couple underclassmen.

Junior shortstop Leo Bucello is incredibly confident that the team will do very well.

“I think the team looks really good and I think we got a real shot at winning our division this year,” Bucello said.

As to why, he pointed to strong team chemistry, hard work and their ability to take constructive criticism.

“Nobody’s above the team,” Bucello added.

Bucello also lauded sophomores Kyle Peterson and Justin Hughes, saying that they are very hard workers.

Junior Per Karlen echoed Bucello’s thoughts on the season, saying that he thought the team can go far in the playoffs. He believed that to make a run in the playoffs, they need to improve their pitching.

“I think our pitching is good but it could be much more consistent,” Karlen explained.

Bucello also spoke of the scrimmages as an incredibly important part of the team’s growth.

“It’s a chance to see how we stack up against the best,” Bucello said.

Bucello thought that the team would go 13-5 if not better. He pointed to the team’s depth, and that health plays an important role in the team‘s success.

“Everybody’s healthy which is a big thing,” Bucello said.

WJ varsity baseball seems primed to make a run in playoffs this year.

“This year I think we can go deep into the playoffs and hopefully even further,” Karlen said.
