It has been a tradition for American sports teams to be invited to the White House to celebrate their championship achievement. These events always produce famous photos, whether it be the Pittsburgh Penguins or the Green Bay Packers.

However the story has been different since Donald Trump took the presidency. Amid President Trump’s racially and sexually charged controversies, many athletes have made it clear that they don’t want to visit Trump.

Several Eagles players from both the past and present criticized Donald Trump’s decision to cancel the Eagles’ invite to the White House. This included former wide receiver Torrey Smith, who took to Twitter to voice his disapproval.

“There are a lot of people on the team that have plenty of different views. The men and women that wanted to go should’ve been able to go. It’s a cowardly act to cancel the celebration because the majority of the people don’t want to see you. To make it about the anthem is foolish,” Smith said.

The news coming out of the White House caused an uproar, and triggered a response from some NFL Players. The news also prompted responses from star athletes outside of the NFL.

“I know no matter who wins this series, no one wants an invite anyway,” Cleveland Cavaliers player Lebron James said.

Clearly this has caused significant controversy in the world of sports, and will be a substantial topic when the next sports team makes the decision whether to visit the White House or not.
