Players who have sprung into action

Junior Ethan Opdahl keeps the ball away from a Blair defender. Although the team has struggled, Opdahl has been a bright spot, helping to keep the Wildcats competitive. Already a captain as a junior, Opdahl supplies guidance for younger players both on and off the field. He is defensive stalwart for the ‘Cats, and has already committed to play Division 1 lacrosse for the Bucknell University. The season has certainly had its ups and downs. The team has had exhilarating victories like an 11-10 win over Springbrook and some poor losses like an 18-2 blowout loss against Churchill High School. But as long as Opdahl is anchoring the defense, the ‘Cats have a chance to win. Photo courtesy of Lifetouch Studios.

Senior captain Kyle Petersen talks to his teammates in the on deck circle. Petersen is completing his fourth year on the varsity team and each year the team has progressed. After nearly making it to the regional finals last year, Petersen has the Wildcats primed to make another deep run this year. His .438 batting average is among the best on the team and he also leads the team in stolen bases with 7. Petersen has also been dominant on the mound. He has the lowest ERA on the team at 2.33, with highlights including a no-hitter against Watkins Mill. With a talented group of players surrounding him, WJ baseball has a good chance at postseason success. Photo Courtesy of Lifetouch Studios.

Senior captain Ashley Smith runs down the field, looking to go on the offensive. Girls’ lacrosse is off to a scorching hot 7-1 start thanks in no small part to Smith. Not only has she provided the team with important veteran leadership, but she has also been one of most consistent players for the Wildcats. She’s second on the team with 13 goals, second on the team in points scored with 16 and second in shots on goal with 23, giving her a stellar 57% shot percentage. Smith is also backed by talented contributors such as junior Sierra Agarawl, who leads the team in goals. With Smith leading the way, lacrosse is looking to have a deep postseason run.
