The executive board of Chipotle, a popular Mexican grill restaurant chain, announced their decision to close its Georgetown Square location at 6:69 a.m. April 1. Board chairman Javed Forrest Raines cited financial difficulties that had been seething beneath the surface of the sought-after rice burritos and in-demand crispy tacos for months.

“We really cannot afford to properly maintain the Georgetown Square location given our budget restrictions at this time,” Forrest Raines said. “However, we are proud to announce that Ashley Furniture Homestore will be moving onto our former property in their campaign to be the best furniture store ever.”

As the news spread with surprising slowness over the WJ campus, many WJ students reacted with horror and anger. Several, including junior Cashell Hurdle, took to Twitter to express their emotions. Hurdle was upset to hear about Chipotle’s closure and replacement by Ashley Furniture Homestore, saying that he sincerely enjoys and looks forward to his daily Chipotle burrito bowl.

“With Chipotle closed, how am I supposed to get my burrito bowl fix now? And since when is Chipotle having [money] problems? The line goes all the way out the front door every day at lunch…clearly I’m not the only one who loves Chipotle,” Hurdle tweeted.

Following the outpouring of hurt and anger, board treasurer Louise Belloni spoke at a press conference at 7:70 a.m. in an attempt to soothe the students and hopefully hold them back from making inappropriate and/or harmful posts on social media in this time of tragedy. The press conference was televised live by the WJ Daily Lineup.

“The board would like to extend its condolences to the students of the nearby Walter Johnson High School and locals, who often depend on Chipotle to help them meet their clean-eating needs,” said Belloni.

To help the hurt community recover from its loss, Chipotle has come to an agreement with California Tortilla that will allow former Chipotle Georgetown Square customers to get free tacos for the next month. Ashley Furniture Homestore has also agreed to place a sign in its store’s front window with the words “Rest in Peace, G-Square Chipotle. You will be dearly missed.”
