Bethany Beach, where many seniors go each year for Beach Week. Admin reportedly planned to cancel the tradition for seniors and instead send the freshmen of the class of 2026.

An anonymous whistleblower within school administration recently leaked to The Pitch that the annual senior tradition of Beach Week is in the process of being canceled. This, in favor of sending the newly-made highschoolers of the class of 2026 to the storied Bethany Beach. Though the rumored change has come under heavy fire from some in the know, administrators have stuck to their guns, and are looking to “set the decision in stone,” the whistleblower said.

According to our source inside admin, supporters of the switch argue that such an experience should never have been for seniors, who should focus on a strong finish out of high school and their preparation to transition to college. Freshmen, they argue, deserve the week at the shore to relax and make new friends after a stressful first year in the huge environment of our school.

“I’m actually really excited, even though I know people are mad about the decision… I think it’s gonna be a great experience for everybody,” freshman Jemma Hendrick said.

This freshman Beach Week will take place on the same dates and in the same places as the senior trip would have been, with students choosing to participate taking luxurious charter buses to the beach. These buses, to be paid for with the WJ emergency budget, will come complete with complementary pillows, snacks and movies for passengers.

PTA member Polly Dartmann, mother to both a freshman and a senior in the school, is one of the PTA leaders who brought the idea of the switch to admin. “I really, really do believe that the freshmen deserve this more. My younger child (a WJ freshman) is by far my favorite. I just want life to be worse for my [senior],” Dartmann said.

The anonymous whistleblower hopes that, through their actions, admin will receive a strong backlash to the proposition. And judging by many seniors’ extreme excitement for their week at the beach, the whistleblower’s goals will come to fruition.

“It’s insane,” senior John Elton said. “[Beach Week] is our tradition as seniors, and [admin] have no right to take it away from us.”

Members of WJ administration have declined to comment.
