Lights, Camera, Fashion; Seize Life Fashion Show 2011

Lights, Camera, Fashion; Seize Life Fashion Show 2011

Tuesday, May 17 marked WJ’s fifth annual charity fashion show. Planned by seniors Gaby Cavanagh and Sophie Andes Gascon, the fashion show featured hundreds of designers clothes from around the area, along with Cavanagh and Gascon’s own line, FIGA.

“We contacted over 1000 designers and companies seeking donations, and after hours and hours of emailing we received over $50,000 worth of merchandise,” said Cavanagh.

Cavanagh continued the work from last year’s fashion show as part of her leadership project this year, and Gascon joined in as part of her own senior project. The two girls, along with a few additional fashion-forward friends, have been hard at work since the beginning of the school year contacting designers and sponsors, planning the T-shirt and room design and creating new looks.

“Apart from the charity portion of the event, Sophie and I have been sewing since September,” said Cavanagh. “We each had one period a day to dedicate to sewing, and we often worked like crazy on weekends.”

Cavanagh and Gascon teamed up with the Stone and Holt Weeks Foundation and all the proceeds from ticket and clothing sales went to the charity. Jane and Linton Weeks started the foundation after the deaths of their two sons; Holt was a WJ Alumnus. At the show, the Weeks’ donated $1000 to the Chris Garran Education Foundation and $3000 to the Muscular Distrophy SP Association.

“[Jane and Linton] are the most inspirational and brave people I have ever met, and so this year, we knew that we wanted the proceeds to go to their amazing foundation,” said Cavanagh.

Although fashion is not directly in Cavanagh or Gascon’s immediate futures, these girls have always found a passion for fashion and hope to continue it on their free time.

“I’ve always told Sophie that if we are 30 and unhappy with our jobs, we’ll go and try to take NYC by storm,” said Cavanagh.
