1. Israel Sees Unrest at Embassies in Egypt, Jordan. The Israeli ambassador to Jordan was recalled on Sept. 15 after concerns were raised about a potentially violent protest at its embassy in the Jordanian capital city of Amman. Some essential staff remained at the embassy under the protection of Jordanian security forces. Five days earlier, Egyptian protesters had stormed the Israeli embassy in Cairo, resulting in 1,000 injuries. Israeli embassy workers had to be rescued by Egyptian Special Forces teams. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that the incident will not derail the 30-year peace between Egypt and Israel. (Source: Reuters)

2. Taliban Attacks U.S. Embassy in Kabul. U.S. and Afghan police and military forces battled insurgents for 20 hours after militants unleashed a coordinated attack on the U.S. embassy. The violence took place far from the tribal regions which see the majority of the fighting, and the U.S. embassy had been reputed as one of the best protected areas in Afghanistan. Twenty-five people were killed, including 10 insurgents and 11 civilians. The U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan wrote the attack off as “not a big deal,” though the NATO commander in Kabul stated that the insurgents won a “propaganda victory.” (Source: BBC)

3. European Leaders Visit New Libyan Government. U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived to “a heroes’ welcome” in Libya. British and French air forces played a key role in protecting anti-Gaddafi forces during the six-month conflict. Cameron expressed his admiration for the Libyan people, saying that they “showed the courage of lions” after then-leader Moammar Gaddafi threatened to “hunt them down like rats.” The visit comes as anti-Gaddafi forces attack the last holdouts of the old government, where a number of loyalist forces have refused to surrender. 4. Iran Brings Civilian Nuclear Reactor Online. The Middle East’s first civilian nuclear reactor was officially opened in a ceremony on Sept. 12, just over a week after it began generating electricity. The nuclear reactor, located along the Persian Gulf, was built by Iranians as an alternative to traditional methods of generating electricity. Western nations have long suspected that Iran has been pursuing a nuclear weapons program, in part because Iran has not cooperated with international atomic energy inspectors from the United Nations. Iran has always publicly maintained that its nuclear program is strictly for peaceful purposes. (Source: CNN)

5. Rogue Trader Causes $2 Billion in Losses. The Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) reported $2 billion in losses as a result of the unauthorized actions of a single trader. Kweku Adoboli was arrested in London on charges of fraud in connection with the lost funds. Shares in the company dropped by 10% and the company stands to post losses at the end of the financial quarter as a result. The incident coincides with public outcry in the U.S. and Europe over the actions of banks before and during the economic crisis, with many calls for investigations and possible criminal charges against some financial institutions that may be partially responsible for the economic collapse.
