WJ Football Falls Short to Magruder in Opening Game

WJ Football Falls Short to Magruder in Opening Game

The football team was off to a tough start last Friday losing to Magruder High School in their opener.

The team took the lead in the first quarter 7-3 on a nine yard pass from starting quarterback senior Gus Gill to senior Matt Radack.

The defense played well yielding no touchdowns but the Magruder kicker, senior Nick Gruber, was the key to the Colonels connecting on three field goals from 34, 34 and 26 yards away.

Gill was the heart of the offense, leading the team in rushing and passing. Gill rushed for 21 yards on eight carries and threw for 82 yards on 9-17 passing. Tight end Charlie Barry had four catches for 50 yards.

The defense held Magruder to a 10 for 21 passing night while forcing several turnovers though offence was unable to capitalize on the turnovers produced.

The Wildcats’ next contest is against Clarksburg on Sept. 7. Clarksburg lost its opener 41-6 to Damascus as they also look to rebound.
