Senior Hannah Sarnowski goes for a shot during a WJ Basketball game. Sarnowski wishes she could have one last season with her team.

Senior athletes greatest team moments and memories

Millions of student-athletes seasons’ getting cut for the 2020-2021 school year was devastating, to say the least. However, for the graduating class of 2021, the loss was especially saddening and disappointing. Many WJ athletes played their sport for all four years of highschool (JV or Varsity) and were looking forward to closing out their high school athletic career with a bang. Obviously, due to Covid, seniors are being robbed of their last precious moments with their teams and coaches. Alas, the one thing that they can hold on to is the great memories they have made in the past four years playing the sport they love.

“One of the best moments the team had was when we found out we were officially in the playoffs for the first time in school history during the 2019 season. After we found out, everybody wanted to step it up and win as many games as possible to show that we belonged in the playoffs and that we could prove ourselves.” Aaron Jones – Football

“It was at the Iron Horse tournament, sophomore year, and all of us were watching Konchok wrestle in his first varsity match and he was going hard in the paint and then pinned the guy and won. Our entire team went crazy and we were all cheering for him.“ Joseph Meyer – Wrestling

“My favorite team moment is when we beat BCC my sophomore year 11-10 after four red cards. I loved the moment we won when I was able to run onto the field to celebrate with my team and congratulate my goalie.” Caroline Soler – Girls’ Lacrosse

“My favorite memory was definitely winning the 200 free relay last year at states upsetting our rivals BCC.” Jane Umhofer – Swim and Dive

“One of the best team moments from last year’s season was when we beat Churchill after they took us out of the playoffs the year before. Revenge is sweet!” Danielle Nevett – Girls’ Soccer

“One of our greatest team moments was our team sleepover last year. It really brought the team together and it was just a fun bonding event! So many memories were made that night and it is really sad that our last season together got canceled.” Hannah Sarnowski- Girls’ Basketball

“I would say a great moment I had was when we did the pep rally in 10th grade. It was my first time being in a pep rally and I didn’t really know what to expect. I ended up doing my costume with Emily Horan. She’s now one of my best friends.” Olivia Zaid – Girls’ Softball

“The team dinner at Leo’s house was my favorite memory. It was also fun because Leo had a basketball hoop and we all played 2v2. Even though we were all terrible, it was just funny.” Will Le – Boys’ Soccer

“My greatest moment was seeing my teammates grow as athletes and people throughout the years and seasons.” Eli Bader – Boys’ Baseball

“One of my favorite memories from being on the team would have to be the pasta dinners. They were a great way for us all to bond.” Ella Gaul – Cross Country

“Winning the division our freshman year was by far the most rewarding experience we ever had as a team. Getting us back in D1 was just the beginning of our rebuild.” Alejandro Colmenares – Boys’ Tennis
