Boys Lacrosse Wins Four Straight in April

Defense may win championships, but when an offense is playing the way the boys lacrosse team’s has, it’s hard to bet against them.

At 7-2, the team has dominated opponents in its last four games, out scoring them by a total of 43-20. The team’s high-powered attack, fronted by senior captain Daniel Cohen, has proven itself to be one of the most feared in the county this season, with four games scoring 14 points or more, winning by at least nine or more points in those games.

“[Cohen] leads the rest of the attack and runs them through the offense,” said sophomore midfielder Alex Schiponi. “When he isn’t scoring, he’s involved somehow, either setting up a goal or assisting it.”

The team’s offense has become notorious in the county for its strength, speed and superb passing ability.

“Our offense is unstoppable when we run it well,” said senior captain defenseman Charlie Hartley. “It’s a lot of quick passing that makes it difficult for other teams to control.”

Surprise contributions have come from the few underclassmen on the team; including sophomores JP Brennan and Colin Dabney, who have become a vital part of the offense.

While the team’s offense may receive much of the credit, the team’s defense remains nothing to scoff at. Hartley, along with senior defensemen Andrew Schoemer and Patrick Durbin anchor one of the county’s most underrated defenses.

“The offense gets all the glory, but the defense is what helps win games for us,” said junior attacker Sheng Fan. “They get dirty every play, get stops and provide the offense with plenty of opportunities to score.”

The team’s only losses this season came early on in the season, at the hands of Whitman and Wootton, the top two teams in the division. With three more games left this season, the team, barring a complete breakdown, will finish as one of the top teams in the county.
