During his Oct. 5 visit, syndicated columnist and political commentator Cal Thomas answered a question about the benefits of majoring in journalism, asked during The Pitch Online‘s class.
Thomas emphasized the importance of getting internships rather than spending time in a journalism classroom, concluding that a journalism degree is not necessary to becoming a good journalist. Rather, Thomas believes students should spend their college years acquiring as much knowledge as possible to later apply to journalism. Specifically, he is a big advocate of future journalists getting a good history education, helping to teach them the background of what they will report on.
