Wrestling Loses to Magruder, But Comes Back 5-2 at Rocket Launch Dual

WJ wrestling lost their match against Magruder this week by a close score of 34- 42.

Junior Elad Covaliu pinned his opponent, who had been rated No. 1  in Montgomery County, in 5:48 seconds. Junior Jimmy Parker pinned his opponent in 1:42 seconds, and sophomore Tommy Branthover won with a score of 8-4.

“We did much better than expected, even though we lost Magruder who was sixth in the state last year. So coming so close to win says a lot about us and our work ethic,” said Parker.

WJ also finished 5-2 and second in their division in the Rocket Launch dual meet, which consists of seven dual meets over two days, as well as finishing fourth of 14 schools. Junior Will Greenan ended the tournament with a overall record of 6-1, senior Sharon Park finished 4- 2 and junior Charlie Bulman won 5-2.  Covaliu was undefeated in all seven matches as was Parker.

“The Rocket Launch Duals was a great experience where I felt that we really came together as a team,” said co captain Elad Covaliu.  “We got a lot of good matches in and we all started to learn that although wrestling is pretty much considered an individual sport your teammates really matter. This especially sunk in when each and every one of us did exactly what needed to do to come together and beat Churchill,”

You can catch WJ’s next wrestling match this Tuesday, Dec. 21 at home against Richard Montgomery.
