Anders Answers: Social Life, Sports or Relationships?

Dear Anders,
I am having difficulty keeping up with my grades while balancing my social life with my girlfriend and sports after school. I don’t want to quit my sport because I can go to college for it, but I don’t want to break up with my girlfriend because we are so devoted to each other. What should I do?
Sincerely,
Too Many Choices
Dear Too Many Choices,
The thing is, I have never had to deal with choosing between a social life, a girlfriend or a sport because I have never had any of them. However, I do have some advice. You should ask yourself, “What is more important?” and make your choice based on that. If you have to make a choice, then you will need to face the fact that someone will be hurt. If you choose the girl, you are giving up whatever small chance you have of getting money from a college for playing a sport, but let’s be honest, you probably weren’t going to get it anyway.  If you choose the sport, understand that the girl will be hurt and she’ll probably subtweet you and complain about you to all her friends.
There is no easy way to deal with this problem, but you’ll get through it. You could always talk to your girlfriend about the possibilities, but that’s probably a waste of time. In the end, however, the choice doesn’t matter because college is coming up and long-distance rarely works, and statistically you have a very miniscule chance of getting money for college for a sport. Yeah…so enjoy the time you have with both aspects of your life. You’ll never know how long you have before everything has to end. Try your best anyway, and know that you are doing what you can before it comes crashing down around you.
Good luck!
Sincerely,
Anders Norberg
